Intensifying Efforts To Reduce Embodied Carbon

LOUIS POLIQUIN, M. SC.

DIRECTOR, CECOBOIS

A growing interest was observed among construction professionals seeking to decarbonize their projects during the most recent edition of the Forum on Low-Carbon and Biobased Construction, held in February 2025.

Several conferences have focused on embodied carbon and its central role in the fight against greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Presentations on Europe’s environmental policies have shown that regulations can help accelerate decarbonization without sacrificing long-term predictability regarding their evolution.

Some of the speakers in attendance demonstrated how the use of wood already complies with the 2030 regulatory threshold regarding the embodied carbon content of project-related materials.

In this issue, the Journal construire en bois will discuss the evolution of regulatory and public policies regarding embodied carbon, including the Buy Clean and Build Clean strategies, measures currently in place in the City of Vancouver, decarbonization in Europe, along with LEED and Zero-Carbon Building (ZCB) certification. The issue will also provide examples of projects designed to reduce their carbon footprint, such as Les Pavillons du 49e and its use of modular solid wood, Bakers Place in Maddison (14 storeys), and 80 Atlantic in Toronto (five storeys).

Also under discussion will be the launch of the initiative known as Construction bas carbone avec le bois (low-carbon construction with wood). Leveraging the experience gained in recent years regarding the quantification of embodied carbon in materials using the GESTIMAT tool, this voluntary initiative by Cecobois seeks to mobilize professionals and municipalities in an effort to decarbonize buildings by increasing the use of wood.

Please enjoy this second issue of the Journal construire en bois, dedicated entirely to decarbonization. Happy reading!
